Milo Greene są stosunkowo młodą kapelą, ale ostatnio jest o nich coraz głośniej. Trudno się dziwić - ich nagrania pojawiały się w różnych serialach, co na pewno przysłużyło się zespołowi. Jednak nawet ta forma promocji w niczym by nie pomogła, gdyby muzyka nie była przyjemna i chwytliwa. A właśnie taka jest - wpadająca w ucho, pozostająca na dłużej. Można odnaleźć w niej kalifornijskie słońce (pamiętajcie, proszę, że słowa pisze osoba, która Kalifornię widziała jedynie na ekranie tv), które gwarantuje pozytywne emocje w czasie słuchania. Przynajmniej mnie niemożliwym wydaje się puszczenie tej płyty, któremu nie towarzyszyłby uśmiech. W związku z tym jest to album, którego unikać powinni wszelkiego rodzaju emocjonalni masochiści - grozi poprawą nastroju.
Brzmienie kapeli jest bardzo przyjemne i "ciepłe". Milo Greene z wdziękiem łączy muzykę rockową z folkiem. Warto zaznaczyć, że wyraźnie bliżej im do tego drugiego gatunku. Poszukiwacze mocniejszego gitarowego grania raczej w euforię nie wpadną. Interesujące jest podejście zespołu do kwestii wokalisty. Otóż nie ma tutaj osoby przypisanej do tej roli na stałe. Z całej, pięcioosobowej kapeli tylko jeden członek nie zajmuje się śpiewaniem - perkusista. Pozostała czwórka beztrosko się zmienia przy mikrofonie. Czasem utwór prowadzi głos kobiecy, czasem męski. Wnosi to sporo świeżości, potrzebnej ze względu na stosunkowo podobne do siebie utwory. Są bardzo ładne: melodyjne, wokale ze sobą harmonizują, chórem śpiewane refreny robią dobre wrażenie. Ale czasem można mieć wrażenie, że cały album to jeden długi utwór. Choć są i takie, które zapadają w pamięć od pierwszego przesłuchania. Tak jest np.: z piosenkami "1957" czy "What's the Matter".
Na płycie znalazło się również miejsce na cztery utwory instrumentalne. Wszystkie są krótkie - dwa trwają poniżej minuty, dwa powyżej. I o ile krótsze w ogóle nie zapadły mi w pamięć, to dłuższe uważam za bardzo dobre, szczególnie "Polaroid". Być może pozostałe mają za mało czasu, żeby nabrać odpowiedniego tempa - jeden trwa niecałe pół minuty...
Na koniec chciałbym wspomnieć o jeszcze jednej rzeczy. Warto wiedzieć, że każdy członek zespołu (może poza perkusistą, a może do tej pory się tylko nie zdradził) z równą swobodą sięga po różne instrumenty. Patrząc na Milo Greene, można odnieść wrażenie, że jak się umie grać na jednym, to umie się grać na wszystkich. Brawa! Wydaje mi się to dawać bardzo duże nadzieje na przyszłość. Osoby o tak otwartych i świeżych głowach powinny nas jeszcze zaskoczyć swoją kreatywnością.
Mimo mojego wcześniejszego narzekania, należy powiedzieć jasno: to dobry album. Trzymam kciuki za sukces!
Dla fanów cyferek: 7/10
Milo Greene is a relatively young band, but they've been getting more and more recognised recently. It's no surprise - their recordings were used in tv series and I'm sure it certainly served them well. However even this sort of promotion wouldn't be enough, if the music itself wasn't nice and catchy. And it is - it stays with you for pretty long time. You can feel California sun when you click "play" (please, only remember, that these words come from a man, who has seen California only on TV screen) and that's something, that guarantees positive feelings while listening. At least it seems impossible to me, to play the record and not to start smiling. That's why I strongly advise all emotional masochists to avoid this album: it might brighten your mood.
The sound of the band has a nice and 'warm' feeling. Milo Greene gracefully merges rock music with folk. It's good to know, that they're obviously closer to second of mentioned genres. If you're looking for harder rock sound, you probably won't get too euphoric about this album. There's no 'permanent' vocalist in the band, what I consider to be very interesting. Only one person from the whole quintet - and that is the percussionist - doesn't have anything to do with singing. The rest presents a light-hearted approach towards the microphone. Sometimes lead vocal is male, other times - female. And that's really good, that's refreshing, because the songs are quite similair. They're all pretty: melodic, vocals harmonize and the choir sung choruses leave a good feeling. But sometimes you can get the impression, that the entire album is one, long song. Although, there are outstanding moments, that immediately stay with you. That's the way it goes with '1957' or 'What's the Matter'.
There are also four instrumentals, that made their way into the debut album. They're all short - two of them are not even minute long, two are a little bit longer. And while I totally can't remember the shorter ones, I find the latter really, really good, especially 'Polaroid'. Maybe the rest just didn't get enough time, to show their potential - one of them isn't even half minute long.
In the end I'd like to mention one more thing. It's worth to know, that all of the band members (maybe except for the percussionist, but it may be the case that he just didn't exposed himself yet) play various instruments with the same ease. When you look at Milo Greene, you can get the impression, that if you know how to play one instrument - well, you know all of them. Bravo! I think that it can make you wait with big expectations. People with such open and fresh heads should surprise us with their creativity.
Despite my complaining, it's a good album, I have to be claer about it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
