Recenzja: Bryn Christopher "My World"

Bryn Christopher, pochodzący z Anglii, wydał swoją płytę już kilka lat temu, w 2008 roku. Był to jego pierwszy i - zdaje się - ostatni album. A szkoda... Cały czas mam nadzieję, że będę miał jeszcze okazję usłyszeć go w nowych utworach, ponieważ zrobił na mnie bardzo dobre wrażenie.

Muzyka jaką można usłyszeć na "My World", ponieważ taki właśnie tytuł ma album, to głównie R&B, ale też trochę soul, trochę pop. Wszystko to razem daje bardzo przystępny i przyjemny w odbiorze efekt. Nawet cover Portishead, który się tutaj znalazł - "Sour Times" - brzmi zaskakująco dobrze. Zaskakująco, ponieważ zmierzenie się z repertuarem Portishead wymaga sporo odwagi, a wyjście z takiego starcia zwycięsko jest już godne podziwu. Nadal wolę oryginał, ale utwór w wykonaniu Bryna Christophera nie jest jedynie słabą podróbką, ma własny charakter.

Zawartość albumu jest pełna emocji. "The Quest", najbardziej chyba znany utwór z płyty, jest bardzo wiarygodnie wykonany, również muzyka burzy krew, choć nie jest to najszybszy numer na płycie. "Stay with Me" porywa swoją rytmiką, energią, wokalista brzmi w nim szczerze. "My World" gwarantuje pozytywne skojarzenia: we mnie zawsze przywołuje obraz otwarcia występu wodewilowego. Światła na scenę, ekscentryczny ubiór i taniec. Jednak np. "Found a New Love", to już prawdziwe, bujające R&B. Zdarza się jednak też nostalgiczny nastrój, jak w "The Way You Are". Właściwie mógłbym utwór po utworze napisać kilka ciepłych słów. Po prostu warto posłuchać.

Dla fanów cyferek: 7/10

Bryn Christopher, coming from England, released his record few years ago, back in 2008. This was his first and - so it seems - the last album. It's a shame... I keep hoping that I'll finally have a chance to hear him sing new songs, because he really made a good impression on me.

Music that can be found on 'My World', because that's the records title, is mostly R&B, although there's also a little bit of soul & a little bit of pop. All together, you hear a very accessible and enjoyable effect. Even Portishead's cover that managed to get here - 'Sour Times' - sounds surprisingly well. Surprisingly, because it takes a lot of courage to even try to deal with this song, and leaving the clash as a winner is admirable. I still prefer original, but Bryn's interpretation isn't a cheap imitation, it has character of it's own.

Albums content is full of emotions. 'The Quest', probably the most famous song from this record, is sung in a very reliable way, the music makes your blood run faster, although it's not the fastest song in here. 'Stay with Me' will carry you away with its rythm & energy, vocalist sound honest. 'My World' guarantees positive connections: it always reminds me of some sort of a vaudeville show. Lights on stage, eccentric clothes & dance. But there's also a real, swaying R&B - 'Found a New Love' - or a moment of nostalgic mood - 'The Way You Are'. Well, I could wrte a few kind words about every song from the album. It's just worth your time.

Rilo Kiley już nie występuje ani nie nagrywa płyt, niestety. Kilka lat temu członkowie formacji zdecydowali się zawiesić działalność i... Już jej nie wznowili. Za każdym razem, gdy wracam do ich płyt, czuję się tym faktem głęboko zasmucony, podobnie jak świadomością, że nie będę miał okazji usłyszeć ich na koncercie. Nie lubię cierpieć w samotności, więc postanowiłem napisać parę słów o ich ostatniej płycie, "Under the Blacklight". Podobno wielu fanom wcześniejszych dokonań zespołu ten album się nie spodobał. Cóż, lubię starsze płyty, ale podoba mi się także ten debiut w barwach muzycznego molocha. Szkoda, że stanowił łabędzi śpiew zespołu z Seattle.

Muzyka nagrana na "Under the Blacklight" to rockowy charakter, wymieszany z błyszczącym, tanecznym popem. Nie jest to oczywiście żaden hard rock, nie mówiąc o czymś cięższym brzmieniowo, ale jest gitarowo, wyraźnie słyszalna jest też perkusja. Prawie wszystkie piosenki napisała w całości sama wokalistka, Jenny Lewis, a w każdej ma swój autorski udział. Teksty napisane przez nią na tę płytę obracają się wokół nocnego życia miasta i relacji damsko-męskich. Już w rozpoczynającym album rytmicznym "Silver Lining" śpiewa poklaskując: "I never felt so wicked/As when I willed our love to die". W "The Moneymaker", utworze o bardzo charakterystycznym brzmieniu za sprawą gitary, usłyszeć można: "You've got the money maker/They showed the money to you/You showed them what you can do". Może właśnie dlatego - i nieco za sprawą teledysku - utwór ten wydaje mi się być znakomity w nocnym klubie, jako oprawa muzyczna... Skoczne i taneczne "Dejalo", idealnie sprawdzające się na parkiecie, również ma ciekawy tekst: "I got a tail if you wanna chase it/I got a tongue if you wanna taste it/I got a place on the east side/I got some time if you wanna...". Utworem idealnym do potańczenia jest też "Smoke Detector" - dla mnie najlepszy numer z całej płyty, również za sprawą zabawnych słów. A ostatni utwór, "Give a Little Love", to już rasowy pop, przywodzący na myśl skojarzenia z dawnymi dokonaniami Pauli Abdul.

W świetle tego, co pisałem wcześniej, mogłoby się wydawać, że płyta jest jeszcze jednym z moich nieco depresyjnych faworytów. Nic podobnego. Jest pełna życia i zabawy. Szkoda, że zwiastowała koniec. Pozostaje słuchać Jenny Lewis śpiewającej solo (albo prawie solo) oraz The Elected, w którym udziela się obecnie Blake Sennett.

Unfortunately, Rilo Kiley is no longer touring or recording. A few years ago band members agreed to put the band on hiatus and... They never came together again. Each time I hear their CDs, I'm saddened by this fact. Just as I'm saddened by the thought of never getting a chance to attend their gig. I hate suffering alone, so I decided to write few words about their last album, 'Under the Blacklight'. I've heard that many fans of their previous releases didn't like this one.Well, I like their older records, but I like this major-label debut as well. Too bad it was this Seattle-based band's swan song.

Music recorded for the 'Under the Blacklight' has rock attitude, but combined with shiny dance-pop. It's not any sort of hard rock, of course, not to even mention something heavier than that. But it's still guitar sound with clear percussion. Almost all of the songs have been written by vocalist alone, Jenny Lewis, and she contributes in every single one. 'Under the Blacklight's lyrics circle around the night city life and male-female relationships. Even in opening album rythmical 'Silver Lining' she sings while clapping: 'I never felt so wicked/As when I willed our love to die'. In "The Moneymaker", composition with very characteristic sound, due to guitar, you can hear: 'You've got the money maker/They showed the money to you/You showed them what you can do'. Maybe that's the reason why - and a little bit because of the video - this song always makes me think, that it would fit perfectly in a nightclub... Jumpy "Dejalo", perfect for the dancefloor, has interesting lyrics as well: 'I got a tail if you wanna chase it/I got a tongue if you wanna taste it/I got a place on the east side/I got some time if you wanna...'. Another song perfect for you, if you wanna head to move, is "Smoke Detector" - for me it's the best song on the entire album, and the funny words play their role here. And the last song, "Give a Little Love", is a regular pop, reminding of Paula Abdul's old achievements.

It might look like the album is another of my little bit depressing favorites. Well, that's not the case. It's colourful, full of life and fun. Too bad it was a harbinger of the end. All we can do now is listen to Jenny Lewis solo (or almost solo) and The Elected, where you can hear Blake Sennett.
